Surfing slang is used comprehensively in and out of the water amongst fellow surfers. there are particular terms that often get thrown around in the surfing world, it can be beneficial that you have an understanding of some of these. i will provide you with 11 basic surfing words: surf safety and etiquette is the most important thing to always keep in the back of your mind whilst surfing. this will ensure your overall safety and allow you to continually enjoy newcastles wonderful world of surfing. there are five basic rules to follow whilst in the water: number five is “do not snake” snaking refers to the person sitting on the outside, furthest away from the wave, quickly paddling past the inside surfer to gain the inside position and get the wave. it is important to stay in your position and allow the inside surfer to enjoy his wave. number four is “do not ditch your board” this refers to jumping off your board to swim under a wave, leaving your board exposed and free to fly around.This can be very dangerous for the surfers around you and particularly the surfer on the wave. you must hold onto your board at all times. number three is “paddle around waves” once you have caught a wave it is important to get out of the wave section as soon as possible so that you are not in the way of other surfers. it is paramount that you paddle around the waves to get back to the surf rather then through the middle of the wave section. number two is “give right of way”, this refers to giving way and allowing the wave to the surfer who is in “priority”.the person deepest, or closest to the peak has priority and gets the wave. it is important to allow the surfer his wave and not paddle for the same wave as this will “snowball” the wave making it difficult for the surfer with priority to enjoy. and lasty, the most important. number one, this is “do not drop in” this means, when a surfer is already on the wave you must not drop in or paddle for the wave. this can be very dangerous for both surfers and is completely not tolerated in the surf amongst all surfers. .
