Kick-off to the Winter surf season in Hawaii. KITV4’s Roger Mari has more on the Pro surfing contest at Sunset Beach and why it’s the chance of a lifetime for some local surfers. Many of the 112 competitors in this years HIC Pro at Sunset Beach paddled out early this morning to get a feel for what the conditions would be like. The surf was still a little bit disorganized but with conditions calming down…officials gave it the green- light. “IT’S A LITTLE DANGEROUS THIS MORNING STILL SOME WASH THROUGH SETS BUT IN BETWEEN THE SETS THERE’S SOME NICE RIDEABLE WAVES.” Wave heights were in the 12-15 foot range. Defending champion Danny Fuller says there will likely be broken boards but it’s better than breaking another vital piece of equipment.”IF YOU WERE TO BREAK YOUR LEASH YOU’D REALLY FIND YOURSELF IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU’D BE PUT TO THE ULTIMATE TEST REALLY.” “THIS YEARS LOCAL CONTINGENT IS A YOUNG ONE. OF THE 65 SURFERS FROM HAWAII ABOUT 20 OF THEM ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 18.” “I’VE BEEN GROWING UP HERE MY WHOLE LIFE AND COMING DOWN TO THIS CONTEST AFTER SCHOOL AND WATCHING ALL THESE OLDER GUYS, I FINALLY GET TO SURF WITH THEM AND COMPETE AGAINST THEM.” “IT’S BIG CHALLENGING CONDITIONS BUT these KIDS ARE FROM HERE FROM HAWAII WERE RAISED IN THE OCEAN SO, IT’S KIND OF LIKE SECOND NATURE.” A lot is riding on this contest as competitors prepare for what’s become to be known as the greatest show on surf.”THEY’RE COMPETING FOR 9 POSITIONS INTO THE VANS TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING SO, IT’S A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT FOR THE LOCAL SURFERS.” “I’M JUST GOING TO TAKE IT HEAT BY HEAT. YOU CAN’T REALLY GET AHEAD OF YOURSELF BUT I’D LOVE TO TAKE THE WIN AGAIN.” Roger Mari KITV4 News. The holding period for the HIC Pro runs through November 11th. There are more waves on the way and organizers say the contest could wrap up by the end of this weekend. .
