Walking in the Canary Islands

They may be better known as beach holiday destinations, but there are plenty of excellent opportunities for walking in the Canary Islands. With their beautiful volcanic landscapes, scenic mountains, and diverse natural wildlife, you can experience some truly spectacular routes on your Canary Islands walking holiday.
r
rEach of the individual islands has something different to offer – here’s an overview of what to expect on each of the five islands…
r
rTenerife
r
rFamed for its black beaches, Tenerife’s volcanic landscape is a walker’s paradise that sees relatively few visitors – ideal for those who like their peace and quiet whilst hiking! The scenery ranges from dramatic ravines to thick forests and rocky coastal paths, with the Adeje and Anaga Mountains providing some of the best walking country on the island. The centrepiece of any walking holiday in Tenerife will likely be Mount Teide – at 3,718m in height, the volcano is the highest mountain in Spain. Whether you manage to get to the top of it or simply walk in its shadow, it is an unforgettable and awe inspiring sight.
r
rLa Gomera
r
rIf you are interested in a Canary Islands walking holiday, La Gomera is likely to be the first place you will consider visiting – it is famed as having the best walking routes of all the islands. The verdant valleys are the main highlight of La Gomera, and as you are walking, listen and see if you can hear Silbo Gomera – the strange whistling language, unique to the island, which was devised by the natives to communicate in the valleys! ( before mobile phones of course)
r
rGran Canaria
r
rThe appeal of walking in Gran Canaria, known as the miniature continent,
ris the sheer diversity of its landscape. The island is home to numerous micro climates, which mean that you can be walking in an alpine meadow in the morning and then a sub tropical valley in the afternoon! The central Cumbre mountain range provides most of the best walking on the island.
r
rLanzarote
r
rThe striking volcanic scenery on Lanzarote can be truly out “of this world”, and Timanfaya National Park is the best place to see the lava fields, salt marshes and volcanic cones that dominate the surreal landscape. The coast of Lanzarote also provides some wonderful walking opportunities, with the northern coastline being more rocky and rugged and the south coast offering sandy beaches and gentle hills. Some of the best walking routes give you the best of both worlds, beginning up in the mountains and ending on the coast for a welcome rest.
r
rLa Palma
r
rFamous for its pine forests, charming villages, and dramatic volcanic ranges, this island presents plenty of opportunities for great walking. The must see sight on this island is The Caldera de Taburiente National Park. With the colossal crater-like mountain arch Caldera de Taburiente stretching 10km across, the park is rife with excellent walking routes through stunning scenery.
r
rWhether you want to explore volcanic craters, lush mountain valleys, or striking coastal walks, you are sure to find the experience you are after on a Canary Islands walking holiday!

The Next Best Thing to Walking On the Moon… – couple hugging at beach

Lanzarote is the most easterly, and fourth largest of the Canary Islands and lies just 79 miles off the African coast and as with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is of volcanic origin and has an almost lunar like landscape in many areas.

This fascinating island has a wonderful year round climate with temperatures often topping 29° during summer and hardly dropping below 21° during winter, making holidays to Lanzarote the perfect winter destination.

One of the most fascinating sights on the island and a ‘must see’ on all holidays to Lanzarote is the Atlantida Tunnel. Thought to be the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, it was formed over 3,000 years ago and was often used by locals to shelter from the pirates plundering their island. The tunnel is over 7km long, 1.6 of which is under the sea, but only 2km are open to the public.

The caves are magically lit from within and the lowest part of the cave has fantastic acoustics so has been made into a very unique concert hall with astounding live performances. The Lanzarote born artist Cesar Manrique has had a huge input into the expansion of the tunnel whish also has a swimming pool, beautiful gardens and delightful restaurants, whilst still making sure the development stays in keeping with its volcanic surroundings. There is a stunning underwater salt lagoon, home to a species of blind albino crab, thought to be found nowhere else in the world.

Timanfaya National Park is another excursion to put on your list whilst on holidays to Lanzarote. This is the site of one of the most violent and long lasting volcanic eruptions in the area; it took place back in 1730 and was so severe it turned the beautiful blue skies to a dark imposing black for six whole years. You’ll be treated to fascinating displays of just how hot the land is here (between 400 and 600 degrees) as dry brush is thrown into a hole and immediately bursts into flames, or water is cast into a pit and is returned almost instantly as steam. You are not allowed to wander freely around the park due to the hazardous sulphur that still emits from many crevices, however there is an enthralling coach trip included in the entrance price which takes you on a journey through a landscape that is closer to the surface of the moon than that of the earth, or try a guided camel ride at a small extra charge.

Cesar Manrique did not only put time and effort into the Atlantida Tunnel though, he has had a huge impact on the way we see holidays to Lanzarote today. He has campaigned tirelessly to minimise the environmental impact that growing tourism has on the island and has succeeded in ensuring there are very few high rise buildings on the island and that buildings are kept to traditional builds. You will also never see ugly billboard advertising blotting the picturesque landscape of this amazing island.

Of course it is fascinating and interesting to see as much of the island as you can whilst on holidays to Lanzarote, but there’s plenty of fantastic couple hugging at beaches when it’s time for some rest and relaxation, non better perhaps than the gorgeous Papagayo couple hugging at beach on the southern tip, benefitting from fine sands and one of the best climates in the Canary Islands.

The appealing year round climate and the fascinating landscape, history and tradition of this island will make sure that holidays to Lanzarote will remain popular year after year.

ladies evening wear – Solo holidays – Rejuvenating and Fun

No two persons are alike – be it in the way that they ladies evening wear, the food that they like, or the activities that they indulge in. There are some who are adventurous, while there are others who do not mind sitting in their respective corners and contemplating on the different aspects of this physical world. And so the fact that the likes and dislikes of two people would be different should not come as any surprise. The importance of solo holidays can be understood in this specific context.

Holidays for the solo traveller are just that. They are designed for people who want to go out all alone in their quest for the new and the exotic. People on a solo vacation can enjoy a lot of freedom and exercise their own will in the type of activities that they would want to indulge in – while holidaying in their kind of places. They can ignore the dictates of friends, peers, and immediate society, and do what their hearts tell them to do.

On solo holidays, people are free to travel to the places that interest them. They are free to mix with the locale people in specific cultures and get to know more about them. They are free to eat the food of a particular place and that too in the way that it should be eaten. They can go for cruises, road trips, safaris, or long drives – as and when they want to.

While on a solo vacation, a person can also get to learn a new craft such as wind surfing, or scuba diving, for instance. On the other hand, he can catch up on an unfinished novel or make notes for his future writing endeavors, as the case may be. Thus, holidays for the single people can be a period of self learning and discovery as well. A person does not need to compromise in any manner and can do whatever he feels like.

In addition, one cannot also ignore some other added incentives of single travel. A single traveller is more approachable; consequently, he is more likely to meet new people and make new friends, even when he is not in his own country.

So, all you people out there who are tired of making compromises can now listen to your hearts and enjoy solo singles holidays. You can take that long awaited trip to Europe for instance, and come back to your families and friends with a lot of stories to tell.

Young surfers heading for Newquay

The top young surfers from the UK and Ireland are heading to Fistral beach on Saturday to take part in the King of the Groms qualifying event.

A top-five finish in Newquay will earn the under-16 surfers a place in the next phase of the competition in Spain.

The European King of the Groms takes place in Zarautz in August.

Organiser Spence Hargreaves is expecting tough competition at Fistral, with youngsters from right across the UK attending the event.

Hargreaves told BBC Radio Cornwall: “We’ve done a series of three KOTGS in the UK, so this is the final at Fistral Beach. It’s basically the best under-16′s in the UK and Ireland.

“This series is being run all over Europe, and the European Champion will get a spot in the World King of the Groms.”

The World KOTGS takes place from 23 September to 4 October for the second year in a row along the beaches of Hossegor, Seignosse, Capbreton and Saint Jean de Luz in the south of France.

Hargreaves said getting selected and subsequently impressing has massive benefits.

“The competition is a stepping-stone for young surfers,” he said.

“If they do well in this event they might go into the junior series and then they can compete in the Boardmasters as they get older.”

Lacomare beats Quinn for Newquay title

The ASP Relentless Boardmasters was won at the death by Marc Lacomare, who beat Jay Quinn to take the lead in the European open ratings.

The Frenchman, 18, is the European Pro Junior champion and claimed a last-gasp win over New Zealand’s Quinn in a similar fashion to his semi-final comeback against Briton Russell Winter.
“I feel so great at this moment, with my boards working so well and with my friends helping me out,” he said. “I was a bit lost and then at the end I got that wave and the score and I am over the moon right now.
“I thought I was gone and had lost for sure, but like in the semi I said to myself, ‘Marc you must keep going and you can do it’ and in the end the wave came and I got the results.
“It’s amazing. I’m so stoked to start the season like this and I am looking forward to the events to come on the European leg and I will try to do my best and see how it goes.”
Veteran Australian Nathan Webster, 36, finished equal third, his best result at the competition.
